Answers on your electricity bill expected Monday

By Belize Live News Staff: Belizeans who have been asking why their electricity bills jumped should get some answers this week.

Belize Electricity Limited and the Government of Belize have scheduled a press conference for Monday, August 24 at 10am at Toucan Hall, Belize Biltmore Plaza on the Philip Goldson Highway in Belize City.

The stated topic is updates on topical issues within the energy landscape, which lands at a moment when the energy landscape is exactly what people are upset about.

Complaints have been building online for days, with some customers saying their bills tripled without any change in their usage. The Cost of Power Adjustment charge approved by the PUC at 1.5 cents per kilowatt hour has been at the centre of the frustration.

Prime Minister John Briceño said Friday that he is concerned but rejected the idea that BEL is taking advantage of consumers, pointing instead to years of underinvestment in infrastructure.

Monday’s briefing is the first chance for BEL and government to lay out their case in full.

What question would you want asked at that press conference?
