"My tranches were for the people," Saldivar says

By Belize Live News Staff: Former minister John Saldivar has released a statement arguing that he was unfairly cast as corrupt, and he is using a current controversy to make the point.

Saldivar noted that Dr. Dylan Vernon, a co-author of a recent report on campaign finance reform, has joined journalist Jules Vasquez in saying no law was broken when Saldivar accepted campaign contributions from an American businessman.

His central claim is a contrast. In his words, “My tranches were for the people not from the people. Mira’s millions are from the people and definitely not for the people.”

That characterisation is Saldivar’s own. The allegations concerning Oscar Mira have not been proven and are currently the subject of an Auditor General’s review.

Saldivar also returned to his designation by the United States as a significantly corrupt person, calling it maliciously construed, without legal basis, and a breach of his due process rights.

He says he is waiting on the Auditor General’s findings and what the Prime Minister does with them.

Do you accept the comparison Saldivar is drawing?
