By Belize Live News Staff: A 17 year old student standing outside her mother’s stall at the Orange Walk market on Sunday morning ended up filing a police report and handing over video evidence.
Police say the teen was talking with another woman around 9:34am when a man she has known by an alias for five years walked up and made explicit sexual remarks toward her, including a threat to sexually assault her wherever he found her.
She told him to stop or she would call police. She pulled out her phone and pretended to dial.
That is when he reached for a wooden chair from a nearby stall and moved to throw it at her.
The woman with her stepped in and started recording. He put the chair down but kept shouting, telling her to stop filming and saying he was not afraid of the burial ground or jail. Then he walked off.
The student went to the Orange Walk Police Station with her mother that morning. Police collected statements and a copy of the footage, and searched the market for the man without success.
He is still wanted. The matter is under investigation.
Are our public markets safe enough for young people?
