He was riding to work when the road took him

By Belize Live News Staff: The shift was set for 4:00 p.m. at the Raccoon Street Police Station. The uniform was already on. Police Constable Armando Toledano was doing the most ordinary thing an officer does, the part of the job nobody writes stories about, riding his motorcycle to work, when a collision near Biscayne Village ended his journey and his life.

Reports indicate PC Toledano sustained critical injuries in the Saturday afternoon impact and was rushed for medical treatment, where he succumbed. He never reached the station. The 4 o’clock shift went on without its constable.

The details of how the collision happened have not yet been released, and this page will not guess at them. What is known is enough to break a heart: an officer in uniform, on his way to serve, taken on the road between home and duty.

There is a special cruelty in that. The dangers of police work announce themselves, the calls, the confrontations, the unknown doors. Nobody budgets fear for the commute. Yet the road makes no distinctions for uniforms, and on Saturday it took a serving officer the same way it took a 73-year-old farmer in the south just the morning before, two riders, two days, two families learning the same unbearable news.

To the family of PC Armando Toledano, to his friends, and to every officer who pulled on the uniform today and made that same ride to work carrying this loss, Belize Live News extends its deepest condolences. The department has lost a colleague. The country has lost a servant who was, in his final act, simply showing up.

The investigation continues, and further details will follow as they are released.

Ride gently out there, Belize. And to PC Toledano: rest easy, officer. Your shift is covered.
