By Belize Live News Staff: Some careers get one act. Moses “Shyne” Barrow is being honoured for living three of them, and this September, the Caribbean is rolling out the stage.
The Caribbean Music Awards has named the Belizean its 2026 Global Ambassador Honoree, an award built for exactly the kind of story Shyne carries: music, transformation, leadership, and impact, in the announcement’s own words.
Rewind to the first act. A young Belizean voice explodes onto the global hip hop scene at the turn of the millennium, that unmistakable baritone helping define an era and carrying Caribbean influence onto the world’s biggest rap stages. For a stretch, Shyne was one of the most talked-about names in music, and the flag he carried, whether the industry knew it or not, was Belize’s.
The second act was harder, the years of adversity and transformation that turned the artist into something else entirely. And the third act is the one Belizeans watched up close: the homecoming, the rebuild, and the rise through public life all the way to Leader of the Opposition in the House of Representatives, a platform he used, as the awards body puts it, to advocate for Belize and its people.
“His story embodies the spirit of a Global Ambassador, representing Caribbean culture, creativity, resilience, and leadership on the world stage,” the announcement reads. Resilience is doing heavy lifting in that sentence, and it has earned its place.
The big night goes down Saturday, September 19, at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, with tickets at CaribMusicAwards.com, and somewhere in that room, when the honour is handed over, a little piece of Belize walks up with it.
Agree with his politics or not, the arc is undeniable: from Brooklyn booths to Belmopan benches to a Caribbean stage built to salute the region’s best. The region has chosen a Belizean story to celebrate, and that, at least, the whole country can raise a glass to.
