GST free Saturday forecast: morning rain, drier afternoon

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has shopping to do tomorrow, and the weather has kindly published its schedule. But first, Friday has to get through its own damp goodbye to the work week.

The National Meteorological Service reports moist and unstable air running the show, with partly cloudy skies today and the isolated showers picking an unusual favourite: inland areas collect the extras through the morning and early afternoon, a change of assignment from the coast and south that have carried most of the recent rain. Tonight the clouds close ranks properly, with showers and thunderstorms visiting most areas while the country sleeps.

The heat holds its late-week form. Inland reaches 94 degrees Fahrenheit (34 Celsius) before easing to 73 (23 Celsius), the coast tops out at 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 Celsius) with a low of 81 (27 Celsius), and the hills sit comfortably at 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius), cooling to 68 (20 Celsius).

The sea stays in its choppy mood, easterly winds of 10 to 20 knots and waves of 3 to 5 feet, workable water with the standard respect for the heavier showers.

Now, the forecast Belize actually wants: tomorrow is the first GST-free Saturday of the month, and the sky has picked its moments. Saturday morning runs cloudy at times with showers and thunderstorms over most areas, so the early birds should carry umbrellas with their shopping lists. By afternoon, the showers shrink to isolated, opening the drier window for the stores, the errands, and the tax-free hauls. Saturday night sends its leftovers south, as tradition demands.

The tropics, meanwhile, offer the shortest and sweetest line of the week: no cyclone formation expected over the region in the next 48 hours, and the faraway Atlantic systems this page has been tracking remain exactly that, far away and no worry of ours.

So close out the week, Belize, dodge tonight’s showers, and set the alarm with confidence. The rain works the morning shift tomorrow. The shopping works the afternoon.

As for the tides, today’s highs fall at 10:57 AM and 11:31 PM, with lows at 5:39 PM and 5:39 AM tomorrow. The sun rose at 5:35 AM and sets this evening at 6:19 PM. This forecast was prepared by forecaster Derrick Rudon.
