By Belize Live News Staff: The knife was five inches of sheetrock blade. Between it and her throat, a Punta Gorda woman had exactly one thing to put in the way: her own left arm. She used it, and she is alive to ask the court for justice.
The Belize Police Department reports that the 41-year-old labourer of the Indianville Extension area came to the Punta Gorda Police Station on Friday, July 31, 2026, to report what she survived the previous Tuesday evening, July 28, at about 6:30 p.m., at her own home.
It began, by her account, with her former common-law partner appearing at her yard with her 5-year-old son. She told him to return the child to where he found him, and he did. Ten minutes later he was back, and this time the boy was not the reason.
She told him to keep his distance and take a chair. Instead came the talk, a boast of violence against someone else, and then the grievance he carried for her: that she had broken up his home, and he would not leave it so. She answered that she owed him nothing and wanted no contact with him.
Then he closed the three feet between them. She reached for her phone to call a relative, he demanded it, and when she refused, the orange-handled sheetrock knife came out of his pocket. What she says followed is the stuff of every survivor’s worst telling: a stabbing lunge, the words “I wa kill you, and I wa kill miself, I nuh gwen da jail,” his left hand closing around her throat, the blade in his right working toward her neck as he declared her dead.
She refused to be. She punched, she kicked, and she held her left arm across her throat, taking the blade in the armpit, the forearm, the palm, the hand, and a finger, five wounds, every one of them the price of the artery he never reached. He broke his grip only to stomp the left side of her face. Her screams pushed him back a step, and when he came again, she came up with a glass pint bottle in her hand. He fled. She ran inside and called her relative.
She has identified him clearly, told police she fears for her life, and asked formally for court action. The report before us shows no detention yet, and with no charge laid, no names appear here. The investigation continues.
Two things in this story should be underlined for every reader, because they save lives when recognized. A partner’s hands around a throat is not “just” an assault, it is the single strongest warning of a future killing, the research is unambiguous. And the words “I will kill you and kill myself” are not drama, they are the highest alarm intimate partner violence sounds. She heard both in one evening and lived, on the strength of one shielding arm and her own refusal to die under her own house.
