By Belize Live News Staff: The little girl rode where village children always ride, on the crossbar of her father’s bicycle, his arms around her as he pedalled. What happened next on a Bella Vista street on Sunday evening is the reason drink-driving laws exist.
The Belize Police Department reports that a 30-year-old project supervisor of the village was cycling with his five-year-old daughter at about 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26, 2026, when he moved to pass a green pickup truck parked at the roadside.
The truck, according to his report, lurched off and swerved across his path, running him off the street with the child aboard. Then it got worse. The driver stopped some ten feet ahead and threw the truck into reverse, backing to within five inches, the width of a hand, of the bicycle’s front wheel before halting. Twice in seconds, the father reported, his daughter’s life was placed in danger, and his own with it.
He confronted the driver, found him appearing intoxicated, and rode straight to the Bella Vista Police Station to put it on record, asking for court action.
Police found the 29-year-old construction worker in his vehicle and detained him, noting, in their account, a strong odour of alcohol on his breath, slurred speech, and a stagger in his walk. He was informed of the offence of driving with an alcohol concentration above the prescribed limit, and the truck’s paperwork piled on: insurance expired a month ago, vehicle licence expired since last November, bringing two more offences, driving uninsured and driving an unlicensed vehicle.
No formal charge has yet been laid, so his name goes unpublished for now, and the investigation continues.
But the arithmetic of the evening deserves to be said plainly. A drunk man behind two tonnes of steel, a father and child on two wheels, and five inches of Sunday evening luck. Bella Vista got a police report instead of a funeral. Not every village does.
