Deported and defiant, Lova Boy faces the music at home

By Belize Live News Staff: Daniel “Lova Boy” Cacho came home the hard way, deported after a US prison term for robbery and other offenses, branded by American immigration authorities as among the “worst of the worst.” Now, in his first interview back on Belizean soil, the artist is betting that honesty is the first step of a comeback.

Facing Jules Vasquez on Channel 7’s Uncut, Lova Boy met his record head-on. He went to prison, he reminded viewers. He pled guilty. He accepted responsibility. “The fact is I did my time,” he said, adding that he understands “consequences go beyond prison time” and that he stands ready to accept whatever that means. His closing pitch was simple and human: “I am not lazy; I am ready and willing to do the work. I miss my people.”

But redemption interviews rarely stay comfortable, and Vasquez took the conversation to its most difficult ground. The journalist recalled that at the height of “Tornado,” Lova Boy’s audience was full of children, schoolkids performed the song at their plays, and asked how the community could embrace him again given a lingering public perception tied to a past accusation involving a minor. Vasquez was careful to state on air that the artist was accused but found innocent of that allegation.

For a moment, the artist had no answer, saying only, “I can’t answer that.” When Vasquez pushed on how he might bridge the trust gap, Lova Boy leaned on the record as he sees it: entertaining rumours could take all night, he said, but “all I have in my corner is the facts, and wherever the chips may land… the chips they fall.”

He did not storm off. He did, at one point, cry, a flash of the man beneath the persona, home again and asking a skeptical public for room to prove himself.

What do you say, Belize, is the slate ever truly clean after time served? Let us know in the comments.
