Flood watch: heavy rains take aim at southern Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: Residents of the southern districts are being urged to stay weather-aware, as an excessive rainfall watch takes effect with a tropical wave parked over the country.

According to the National Meteorological Service, excessive rainfall of up to 2 to 4 inches or more is possible over the southern districts during the next 24 hours. Residents are advised to continue monitoring the weather situation and to stay tuned for flood updates from the National Hydrological Service and NEMO, particularly after the flooding that hit parts of the country just days ago.

The wave will keep conditions moist and unstable overall. Skies will be cloudy today with sunny breaks, turning cloudy at times tonight. Some outbreaks of showers and a few thunderstorms are expected to develop mostly over the south today, decreasing slightly tonight, before shower activity increases again tomorrow morning, mainly over the south and along coastal areas.

Importantly, there is no storm behind this rain. No tropical cyclone formation is expected over the region during the next 48 hours.

Temperatures along the coast will reach a high of 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 Celsius) and a low of 81 (27 Celsius). Inland areas will climb to 93 degrees Fahrenheit (33 Celsius) and drop to 73 (23 Celsius). In the hills, expect a high of 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) and a cooler low of 68 (20 Celsius).

At sea, winds will blow from the east at 10 to 15 knots, with choppy seas and waves of 3 to 5 feet.

Looking ahead to Wednesday and Wednesday night, skies will be cloudy at times with outbreaks of showers and thunderstorms developing mainly along the coast and over the south during the daytime, then gradually decreasing.

Today’s high tides are at 9:19 AM and 10:58 PM, with a low tide at 4:52 PM and another low at 3:47 AM tomorrow. The sun rose at 5:26 AM and will set at 6:30 PM. The forecast was issued by forecaster Catherine Cumberbatch.
