By Belize Live News Staff: Before a ball has even been kicked, today’s World Cup quarter-final between France and Morocco has been engulfed in controversy, and this time it is not about the players, but the officials.
FIFA has appointed an all-Argentine crew to take charge of the match in Boston. Referee Facundo Tello will be assisted by compatriots Juan Pablo Belatti and Gabriel Chade, with Darío Herrera as fourth official and Christian Navarro as reserve assistant. According to Yahoo Sports, it marks the first time at this tournament that every match official for a knockout fixture comes from the same nation.
The problem, as critics see it, is timing. Argentina, the defending champions, are still alive in the tournament and could yet meet France in the final. For a match of this magnitude, FIFA has typically favoured officials from neutral confederations, and the decision to hand a potential rival’s quarter-final entirely to Argentine whistles has, in the words of Yahoo Sports, infuriated French fans and media.
The appointment also lands at a sensitive moment. Accusations of favouritism toward Argentina are at their peak following the champions’ dramatic 3-2 comeback against Egypt, a match in which Egypt had a goal controversially disallowed and protested a perceived foul in the buildup to the stoppage-time winner. Egypt’s camp went as far as suggesting the tournament was being bent to keep Argentina and Lionel Messi alive, an allegation that remains just that, an allegation. Coming on the heels of the Balogun red card saga and the Croatia VAR storm, the optics have given conspiracy theorists plenty to chew on.
There is, however, another side to the story. FIFA’s neutrality rules are technically satisfied, since Argentina are not involved in today’s fixture, and reports indicate the France camp itself has played down the controversy. Tello, for his part, is regarded as one of the game’s most respected and uncompromising referees, famous for showing 10 red cards in a chaotic Argentine cup final, and Morocco know him well. He was the man in the middle for their historic 1-0 quarter-final win over Portugal at the 2022 World Cup.
Still, in a tournament already dogged by officiating controversies, the decision has added yet another layer of intrigue to what was already a blockbuster clash. Kick-off is at 2:00 p.m. Belize time.
