By Belize Live News Staff: Belize has officially assumed the Presidency Pro Tempore of the Central American Security Commission, taking on a leadership role in the region’s collective efforts to confront shared security threats.
The handover followed the conclusion of the 83rd Ordinary Meeting of the Central American Security Commission, held on June 23, 2026, at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System, known as SICA, in San Salvador, El Salvador.
The meeting brought together representatives from SICA member states to review progress under the regional security agenda and to discuss coordinated responses to emerging threats. Talks centred on a range of priority areas, including cybersecurity, migration, gender-based violence, restorative juvenile justice, forensic sciences, and regional capacity building initiatives.
The Belize delegation was led by Rear Admiral Elton Bennett, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise. At the close of the meeting, the Dominican Republic formally transferred the Presidency Pro Tempore of the Commission to Belize, with Rear Admiral Bennett delivering Belize’s acceptance remarks on behalf of the Government and people of Belize.
Belize will now hold the Presidency Pro Tempore from July 1 to December 31, 2026. During this period, the Ministry of Home Affairs and Enterprise is charged with implementing the agreements adopted by the Commission, while advancing cooperation among member states on regional security and the fight against transnational organized crime.
The Ministry says it remains committed to working closely with regional partners to promote peace, security, and sustainable development for the benefit of both Belize and the wider Central American region.
