By Belize Live News Staff: For the People’s United Party, San Ignacio and Santa Elena have become the one prize that keeps slipping away, and Prime Minister John Briceño says he intends to change that.
Despite the PUP’s commanding run at the national level, the Twin Towns have stayed firmly in the United Democratic Party’s column.
Mayor Earl Trapp has led the municipality for four consecutive terms, and in the 2024 municipal elections, San Ignacio/Santa Elena stood out as the only municipality in the entire country that the UDP won.
That history has not discouraged the Prime Minister. With municipal elections now less than a year away, Briceño says he is confident the constituency can be flipped, and that his party’s team on the ground is already hard at work.
Flipping the Twin Towns would be a significant symbolic win for the PUP, removing the UDP’s last municipal foothold. The UDP, for its part, will be looking to defend a stronghold it has held through wave after wave of PUP success.
As both parties gear up, San Ignacio/Santa Elena is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests of the upcoming municipal elections.
