Opposition seeks details on government’s $75 million NHI allocation

By Belize Live News Staff: The political debate over healthcare funding intensified this week after Opposition Leader Tracy Panton publicly questioned the government’s handling of National Health Insurance finances.

Using the phrase “The Math Is Not Mathing,” Panton challenged the Briceño administration to provide more details about the contracts and expenditures associated with the growing NHI program.

Panton argued that Belizeans deserve to know which healthcare providers are receiving contracts, how much they are being paid, and whether public healthcare facilities are benefiting from the significant investment being made through NHI.

The Opposition Leader expressed concern that some contracted facilities may be receiving lucrative agreements while public clinics and healthcare centers continue facing resource challenges.

She also called for greater public disclosure regarding the government’s reported $75 million NHI allocation for the current fiscal year.

The comments come as the government continues promoting NHI as a key pillar of its healthcare strategy, aimed at expanding access to affordable medical services throughout Belize.

Supporters of the program argue that NHI has already improved healthcare access for thousands of Belizeans and reduced financial barriers to treatment.

However, Panton says transparency must accompany expansion.

Her remarks are likely to fuel further discussion in the weeks ahead as both government and opposition continue debating the future of healthcare financing in Belize.

With healthcare remaining one of the issues that directly affects every Belizean family, questions surrounding costs, contracts, and accountability are unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
