By Belize Live News Staff: Police investigators are now looking closely at visibility and lighting conditions following a fatal collision that claimed the life of 18-year-old Eutemito Pech near Guinea Grass Village.
The accident occurred shortly before 10:00 p.m. on Friday and involved a motorcycle, a horse-drawn buggy, and a pickup truck.
According to ASP Stacy Smith, investigators have discovered evidence suggesting the buggy may not have been fully on the roadway at the time of the collision.
“The indication so far is that the horse carriage may not have been fully on the road. It was off road and certainly questions of lighting conditions are at play,” Smith said.
Police say Pech collided with the rear of the buggy before being thrown into the path of an oncoming pickup truck, resulting in fatal injuries.
The case has renewed concerns about the safety of horse-drawn vehicles traveling at night, particularly on highways and major roads where visibility can be limited.
Investigators are expected to determine whether adequate lighting or reflective materials were present on the buggy and whether visibility played a role in the deadly crash.
As the investigation continues, police say additional information will be released as it becomes available.
The tragic incident marks another fatal road traffic accident in Belize and serves as a reminder of the dangers motorists face when traveling at night.
