By Belize Live News Staff: Nearly three years after the tragic death of 4-year-old Ayana Bennett, the case against her foster parents is now moving to trial.
Marvin Denver Plett and Lena Plett are set to appear in Belmopan today where they will face trial on manslaughter charges.
The case dates back to November 2023, when Ayana reportedly died while in foster care. Allegations later surfaced that the child had been beaten after refusing to take part in a learning activity.
The death of the young girl shocked the nation and raised serious questions about child protection, foster care oversight and accountability for vulnerable children placed in the care of others.
The Pletts have retained attorney Leroy Banner as their legal representative.
As the trial begins, attention will turn to the evidence prosecutors intend to present, the defense’s response and whether the court will determine criminal responsibility in Ayana’s death.
The proceedings are expected to be closely watched by child advocates, members of the public and all those who have followed the case since it first came to light.
Belize now waits to see how the justice system will handle one of the most heartbreaking child death cases in recent memory.
