By Belize Live News Staff: Belmopan politics took another dramatic turn this week after John Saldivar and Oscar Mira publicly squared off in a growing feud that has captured attention across social media.
The dispute began with Saldivar’s post alleging that members of the Mira family have benefited from government contracts and business opportunities since the PUP administration came to power.
Saldivar contrasted those allegations with the controversy that led to his own political downfall, arguing that while he paid a political price for accepting campaign contributions years ago, Belizeans should also examine questions surrounding public contracts and procurement.
His comments quickly attracted attention online and sparked discussion among supporters and critics alike.
Oscar Mira responded hours later.
In a strongly worded statement, the minister defended his leadership and argued that Belmopan residents have repeatedly elected him because of tangible improvements delivered to the constituency.
Mira highlighted roads, housing, education, health services and infrastructure projects as examples of progress under his administration.
The minister also accused Saldivar of leading attacks against him and dismissed the criticism as misinformation.
Importantly, the allegations raised by Saldivar have not been proven in court and no official findings of wrongdoing have been announced against Mira or his relatives.
For now, the dispute remains a political battle fought in the public arena rather than a legal one.
What is clear, however, is that tensions between the former and current Belmopan representatives have escalated significantly, setting the stage for what could become one of the most closely watched political rivalries in the country.
