By Belize Live News Staff: The Development Finance Corporation may soon be known by a new name following the introduction of legislation in the House of Representatives last week.
The proposed Development Finance Corporation (Amendment) Bill 2026 would officially rename the institution the Development Bank of Belize.
Prime Minister John Briceño told the House that the amendment is a straightforward but important step that reflects the expanded role the institution has taken on over the years.
Originally established in 1963, DFC has become one of Belize’s most important sources of financing for students, homeowners, entrepreneurs, farmers and businesses seeking development-focused loans.
In recent years, the institution has also expanded into renewable energy and energy efficiency financing, helping fund projects aimed at reducing energy costs and promoting sustainability.
Government officials believe the new name will help modernize the institution, improve public recognition and strengthen confidence among borrowers and investors.
Briceño emphasized that the Development Bank of Belize would remain focused on development financing rather than competing directly with commercial banks.
Supporters of the proposal argue that the new name more accurately describes the institution’s mission and could help position Belize more effectively within the regional development finance sector.
The amendment bill will continue through the legislative process in the coming weeks.
