Alberto August comes out swinging after release; Oscar Mira is unfit to lead the police department and should not be wielding that power

By Belize Live News Staff: Alberto August spent 28 hours in custody. He walked out Sunday and he has not been quiet for a single moment since.

Prime Minister John Briceño personally intervened to secure August’s release following direct appeals from UDP figures including Senator Peyreffitte, the Mayor of San Ignacio and Santa Elena and the former party leader. August confirmed that it was through those interventions that he was made to contact the Prime Minister who instructed that a station bail be granted.

But do not mistake August’s freedom for gratitude toward the minister who put him there.

When 7News reporter Jules Vasquez asked whether he was grateful to the Prime Minister for stepping in to secure his release August did not hold back. His answer was unfiltered, unapologetic and aimed directly at Oscar Mira.

“It is like me for example saying right if you shoot me in my foot I will thank you for picking me up and taking me to the hospital. You should not have shot me in the foot in the firstance so whatever intervention done on the part of the prime minister was as a result of the stupidness of one of his ministers.”

He was not finished.

“Man they people with they kind of character should not be wielding the power.”

And then August delivered his most direct verdict on the man who put him in a cell over a Facebook post.

“This man is unfit totally unfit to lead the police department that is why we are facing the level of criminality in this country. Unfit. You wonder what it is then that he discusses in these police meetings if you mind is so small and your skin is so thin.”

Strong words from a man who just walked out of a police station with a cybercrime charge hanging over him. But words that a significant portion of Belize is clearly ready to hear.
