By Belize Live News Staff: The battle over dredging and mining activities in Belize’s tourism destinations is intensifying after the Belize Tourism Industry Association publicly called for an immediate halt to ongoing projects in Placencia Lagoon and Ambergris Caye.
BTIA says recent developments have triggered growing frustration among residents, tourism operators, environmental advocates and community stakeholders who fear the long-term environmental and economic consequences of continued dredging and coastal alteration.
According to the association, development should never come at the expense of Belize’s ecosystems, which form the backbone of the country’s tourism economy. BTIA President Efren Perez stressed that the tourism industry cannot remain silent while some of Belize’s most valuable natural assets face increasing environmental pressure.
The association says it is now engaging government ministries and agencies to encourage dialogue and solutions that balance development with environmental protection and sustainability.
The issue is expected to remain a major national conversation as pressure continues mounting from environmental groups and tourism stakeholders across the country.
