Caribbean pushing to cut food imports by 25 percent

By Belize Live News Staff: Caribbean countries are being urged to take stronger action to transform agriculture and reduce dependence on imported food.

Guyana’s Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha says the region is working toward cutting its food import bill by 25 percent, while building a more resilient and sustainable agriculture sector.

Speaking at the National Agriculture and Trade Show, Mustapha emphasized the need for climate-smart farming, improved infrastructure, and greater investment in production and agro-processing. He also stressed the importance of removing trade barriers to allow food to move more easily across the region.

A major focus, he says, is increasing youth involvement in agriculture by making the sector more modern and attractive through technology and innovation.

The minister added that stronger regional cooperation will be key to achieving long-term food security and economic stability in the Caribbean.
