Government introduces bus subsidy and cost-saving measures amid fuel crisis

By Belize Live News Staff: The Government of Belize has approved a three-month fuel subsidy for bus operators as part of broader efforts to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices.

Prime Minister John Briceño confirmed that private bus operators will receive a $3 per gallon subsidy over the next three months. The initiative is intended to prevent fare increases for commuters across the country.

The prime minister noted that roads operated by the National Bus Company will maintain current fare rates, ensuring stability for passengers during this period.

In addition to subsidies, Cabinet has agreed to implement cost-saving measures, including deferring $30 million in capital expenditures and cutting $25 million in goods and services across ministries. Officials will also reduce travel expenses by prioritizing virtual meetings and limiting the use of government vehicles.

Briceño emphasized that the government will continue monitoring the situation and may introduce further measures if global fuel prices continue to rise.
