Miss Universe finalist’s Belize visit marred by racist comment

By Belize Live News Staff: A high-profile visit meant to highlight culture and collaboration has been overshadowed by controversy after a racist comment surfaced online.

Olivia Yacé, Miss Universe fourth runner-up representing Côte d’Ivoire, is currently in Belize working alongside Miss Universe Belize, Isabella Zabaneh, on a series of cultural and social projects.

However, the visit took a negative turn when a local tour guide made a racist remark on Facebook, drawing criticism and sparking public discussion.a

Zabaneh publicly addressed the issue, expressing disappointment that the comment came from someone in the tourism sector. She emphasized that the remark was not only offensive to Yacé, but also to her as a Belizean.

“Belize is a melting pot… and we need to let that pot melt,” Zabaneh stated, highlighting the importance of unity and respect.

The tour guide has since issued an apology, claiming the comment was made in jest and not intended to cause harm.

Despite the incident, Yacé remained composed and positive, encouraging resilience and urging others not to dwell on negativity.

She also praised Belize, noting that her overall experience has been welcoming and warm.
