Hurricane Beryl Update: Tropical storm watch remains in effect for northern Belize

By Belize Live News Staff: As of 12:00 p.m. on July 4th, 2024, Hurricane Beryl, a Category 2 system, is located approximately 275 miles east-southeast of Tulum, Mexico. The hurricane is packing maximum sustained winds of 110 mph and continues to move west-northwest at 18 mph.

The National Meteorological Service (NMS) of Belize continues to closely monitor the storm’s progress, and a Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the area from Belize City northward to Corozal. This means that tropical storm conditions, with sustained wind speeds of 39-73 mph, are possible within the next 24-36 hours.

Residents in the watch area are urged to remain vigilant, monitor weather updates, and listen to official bulletins from the NMS and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO).

An excessive rainfall watch is also in effect for the entire country, particularly the north and coastal areas. Residents are advised to monitor the weather situation and contact the Hydrology Unit for information on flooding or NEMO for advisories.

A small craft warning is in place due to the expected strong gusty winds and rough seas. Operators of small crafts are advised to remain in a safe harbor until the storm passes.
