Man loses $500 in alleged Facebook marketplace scam

By Belize Live News Staff: Police are investigating a case of obtaining money transfer by deception reported in Belize City.

On March 17, 2026, 19-year-old George Sarmiento, a jeweler of Belama Phase 4, reported to police that he was allegedly scammed while attempting to purchase a phone online.

Sarmiento told police that on March 14, he saw an iPhone 14 advertised for $550 on the Belize Buy and Sell platform by a user identified as “Ras Rulz.”

After making contact, he agreed to purchase the phone for $500 and was instructed to send a deposit.

Police say Sarmiento made two online transfers of $250 each to an Atlantic Bank account under the name Antwan Will Latchman, totaling $500.

He was later informed that the phone had been shipped via Tropic Air.

However, checks at Tropic Air offices in Belize City and Ladyville reportedly revealed that no package had arrived.

Up to the time of the report, Sarmiento said he had not received the phone or a refund.

Police investigations are ongoing.
