Belmopan mayor says double murder suspects not from capital

By Belize Live News Staff: Belmopan Mayor Pablo Cawich is standing by comments that both the victims and attackers in Friday night’s double murder are not from Belmopan.

The shooting, which claimed the lives of two men in Central Belmopan, sparked intense public discussion after statements from city officials suggested the crime stemmed from issues outside the capital.

In an interview, Mayor Cawich said the victims and suspects were from outside Belmopan and sought to dismiss claims that the capital is becoming unsafe.

“It is not affiliated to Belmopan in any way. Both the victims and the attackers are from outside of Belmopan,” the mayor stated, adding that suggestions that Belmopan is deteriorating in safety are “clearly untrue.”

However, documents later surfaced indicating that one of the victims was in fact born in Belmopan and was a registered voter in the constituency, raising questions about the accuracy of those claims.
