By Belize Live News Staff: Belize is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Beryl, a powerful Category 4 storm currently churning in the Caribbean Sea. As of 6:00 a.m. today, Beryl was located approximately 858 miles east of Belize City, moving west-northwestward with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph.
The National Meteorological Service of Belize and the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) have issued a Tropical Storm Watch from Belize City to Corozal, including Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.
Belizeans, particularly those in the northern regions, are urged to prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall starting Thursday night and continuing through Friday. This could lead to significant flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas, especially considering the already saturated ground conditions. Strong winds are also expected, creating rough sea conditions with large waves.
NEMO is actively coordinating preparedness and response efforts, with all district emergency operations centers activated. The organization is advising residents to:
Activate family/emergency plans and check emergency supplies.
Prepare to leave high-risk areas if necessary.
Clear drains to reduce flooding.
Secure assets and stay informed about the storm’s progress.
Shelters have been identified in the Corozal District, Orange Walk District, and San Pedro Town and will open if needed.
