Political climate blamed as Centaur ends BTL talks

Political climate blamed as Centaur ends BTL talks

By Belize Live News Staff: The Centaur Group of Companies has formally withdrawn from negotiations with Belize Telemedia Limited regarding a proposed acquisition, marking a major development in the ongoing telecom consolidation debate.

In a letter dated January 11, 2026, Centaur confirmed that after careful consideration, it has decided not to proceed with the transaction. While acknowledging that the proposed deal offered clear financial and operational merits, the company said its decision was influenced by broader external and political considerations that emerged during the process.

Centaur emphasized that its withdrawal was not due to concerns over valuation or the underlying business case. Instead, the company cited the growing personal and reputational burdens associated with continuing the negotiations under intense public scrutiny.

The company expressed appreciation for the engagement and professionalism of BTL’s leadership and noted that the decision was made with respect for the discussions that had taken place.
