UDP prepares to elect its first-ever female leader as Tracy Taegar-Panton heads into Sunday’s convention unopposed

Opposition says Belizeans deserve answers on telecom merger

By Belize Live News Staff: The United Democratic Party (UDP) is set to make history this Sunday as Tracy Taegar-Panton prepares to become the party’s first-ever female leader. With no candidate challenging her for the post, the longtime parliamentarian and former minister is widely expected to be endorsed during the party’s first national convention in more than two years.

UDP officials say the convention marks a major turning point after a prolonged period of internal division and political losses. Deputy Party Chairman Alberto August noted that while resources are limited, the party is united behind Taegar-Panton as it seeks to rebuild and reestablish its presence as Belize’s main opposition.

August described the moment as one of renewal, saying the UDP needs “a viable and revitalized leadership to move forward” and that Taegar-Panton has earned the confidence of supporters through her years of service.

The party expects more than 500 delegates to participate in Sunday’s vote.
