Belize joins global campaign for safer use of medicines

By Belize Live News Staff: The Ministry of Health and Wellness is encouraging Belizeans to speak up about medicine safety as the country participates in the #MedSafetyWeek global campaign, taking place from November 3 to 9, 2025.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the campaign, which includes 130 organisations worldwide working together to promote the safe use of medicines. The campaign highlights that anyone, not just doctors and pharmacists, can help make medicines safer by reporting suspected side effects.

The Ministry says that every report matters because it allows regulators to detect potential risks early and take action to protect the public. Despite this, only a small percentage of side effects are reported globally, often because people don’t know it’s possible or don’t think it matters.

“Medicines safety starts with you and me,” said Dr. Melissa Diaz-Musa, Director of Public Health and Wellness. “Speaking up could help protect someone else.”

The Ministry urges the public to report any suspected side effects by calling 880-2363 or emailing inspectoratemohw@health.gov.bz
or drugalert@health.gov.bz.
