Tourism industry braces for tough months after decline in arrivals

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s tourism sector is showing early signs of strain after the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) reported a sharp 8.6 percent decline in overnight tourist arrivals for September 2025, compared to the same month last year.

The data shows that overnight visitors fell from just over 22,000 to under 21,000, a worrying drop for what has long been considered the heartbeat of Belize’s economy. Industry insiders warn that the slowdown could signal tougher months ahead, especially as global and regional economic pressures mount.

Tourism stakeholders say the decline reflects broader challenges, including the ongoing U.S. federal government shutdown, which has created uncertainty for American travelers — Belize’s largest visitor market. With many Americans tightening their budgets, officials fear the final months of 2025 could bring further declines in arrivals.

Minister of Tourism Anthony Mahler acknowledged that while Belize enjoyed a strong start to the year, “the geopolitical and economic climate is now having a real impact on the industry.” Meanwhile, BTB Director Evan Tillett emphasized the vital role that overnight tourism plays, noting that it directly supports local employment, small businesses, and foreign exchange earnings.

Tourism operators across the country are now hoping for a rebound in the high season beginning in late November, as they brace for what could be a challenging close to the year.
