Hurricane Melissa slams the Caribbean with catastrophic flooding and damage

By Belize Live News Staff: Hurricane Melissa continues to leave a trail of destruction across the Caribbean, bringing catastrophic flooding, landslides, and storm surge to several countries as the powerful Category 5 system moves north-northeast.

According to the National Hurricane Center’s 5:00 a.m. advisory, Jamaica remains severely impacted, with widespread damage, downed power lines, and flooded roads making travel nearly impossible. Authorities have urged residents to remain sheltered until further notice.

In Haiti and the Dominican Republic, catastrophic flash flooding has destroyed homes and cut off communities. Emergency officials report that entire neighborhoods are isolated as landslides block major roads.

Eastern Cuba is now experiencing life-threatening storm surge and heavy rain, while the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands brace for strong winds and torrential rainfall today.

Meteorologists warn that Bermuda may begin feeling hurricane-force winds by Thursday night as Melissa continues to track northeastward across the Atlantic.

Rainfall totals of up to 16 inches have been recorded in parts of Jamaica and Hispaniola, worsening the humanitarian crisis in areas already struggling with power outages and displacement.

Authorities continue to advise residents across the Caribbean to stay alert and follow local emergency guidance as Hurricane Melissa remains an extremely dangerous storm.
