By Belize Live News Staff: Today, the Belize government will introduce a resolution in the National Assembly to declare a State of Emergency in certain parts of Belize City and the Cayo District, following the detention of over 90 individuals in a gang crackdown since Tuesday.
Prime Minister John Briceño stated that the State of Emergency, recommended by the Minister of Home Affairs and Commissioner of Police, is expected to last 90 days, extending through the September Celebrations. This duration aims to facilitate thorough police investigations and restore security in the affected areas of Southside Belize City and the villages of Cotton Tree and Roaring Creek.
Police are actively searching for over 30 additional individuals suspected of gang affiliation or criminal activity. However, the government’s actions have sparked complaints from families disputing the characterization of their detained loved ones and concerns about the treatment of detainees during previous States of Emergency.
The proposed 90-day State of Emergency would grant authorities enhanced powers to address gang violence and crime in the targeted areas, but it also raises concerns about potential human rights implications and the long-term effectiveness of such measures.
As the National Assembly prepares to debate the resolution, the situation in Belize remains tense, with both residents and authorities hoping for a resolution to the ongoing security challenges.
