Belize’s Cayo District earns global praise for sustainable tourism success

By Belize Live News Staff: Belize’s Cayo District has been internationally recognized for its remarkable approach to sustainable tourism, earning a place among the World’s Top 100 Stories at the Green Destinations Global Conference 2025 in Montpellier, France.

The story, titled “Loving Cayo: A harmonious blend of conservation and culture for a vibrant future,” celebrates how communities, conservationists, and businesses in Cayo are working together to protect the environment while promoting authentic cultural experiences.

From indigenous communities and grassroots organizations to private tourism operators and eco-lodges, the initiative showcases how collective action can build a resilient and regenerative tourism model that benefits both people and planet.

Among the honorees were Belize Karst Habitat Conservation, Itzamna Society, Bulridge Ltd., Lucky Dreamer Lodge, Sak-Tunich, and the Green Iguana Conservation Project at San Ignacio Resort Hotel — all recognized for their role in shaping a sustainable future for Cayo.

The project received additional support from Riviera Maya Sostenible, a regional partner advocating for responsible and regenerative tourism practices across the Caribbean and Latin America.

This achievement marks another proud moment for Belize, proving that the country’s commitment to community-driven conservation continues to inspire the world.
