By Belize Live News Staff: Opposition Senator Patrick Faber has urged the Government to keep full public ownership of Belize’s new hydro assets and redirect future investments toward solar and battery energy projects.
Responding to the Belize Electricity Investments Bill, 2025, Faber said that while the United Democratic Party supports Belizean control of energy resources, the current deal “buys back the past instead of building the future.”
He argued that the US $110 million used to purchase the Fortis Belize dams could have financed more than 150 megawatts of solar generation and large-scale battery storage, initiatives that would reduce dependence on imported power and move the country closer to true energy independence.
Faber also criticized government plans to resell shares of the new company, calling it “short-term speculation.” He maintained that hydro generation is a public good and should remain under state management, with any profits reinvested to lower electricity rates and expand rural electrification.
“The people deserve energy security, not political theatre,” Faber said. “If these assets truly belong to Belize, they must serve the people first.”
