By Belize Live News Staff: A new legal battle has emerged as Courtenay Coye LLP filed suit against the Government of Belize and the Belize Tax Services Department on behalf of Andrew Munnings.
The lawsuit claims that Munnings was billed for services he never received and taxed for revenue he never earned. His attorney further argues that funds collected on behalf of other providers were wrongly treated as his income, resulting in a tax bill that should not have existed.
Despite these claims, the Belize Tax Services Department enforced the bill, treating it as a judgment debt that led to Munnings’ imprisonment.
The lawsuit alleges that this enforcement violated his constitutional rights, including liberty, property, and protection against arbitrary deprivation.
Munnings contends that the case has caused him severe financial loss, distress, and damage to his reputation.
The case was filed on Wednesday, and no hearing date has yet been set.
