Health officials confirm second human screwworm case in Cayo District

By Belize Live News Staff: A 60-year-old resident of Camalote Village has become the second human case of New World Screwworm infection reported in Belize. The patient, infected in his lower leg, is being treated at the Western Regional Hospital.

The detection was made on Tuesday while surveillance teams were still on the ground conducting checks for additional cases. This new report comes just one day after the country’s first confirmed human infection, which involved a 21-year-old man from Benque Viejo del Carmen.

Officials say the presence of the parasite is now so widespread that additional human infections are expected.

The Ministry of Health is advising the public to remain vigilant, stressing that the best defense against the screwworm is proper wound care. Residents are urged to cover any open wounds and seek medical attention quickly if they suspect an infestation.
