By Belize Live News Staff: Excitement is building in southern Belize as Placencia prepares to host the first annual “Battle of the Paddles” on Sunday, August 3, 2025. This newly launched event is expected to draw paddlers, families, and environmental supporters from across the country and abroad in a celebration of sport, community, and conservation.
The race is a collaborative initiative between the Placencia Village Council, the Crocodile Research Coalition, and Barefoot Services, with the shared goal of using recreational tourism to highlight the importance of protecting the Placencia Lagoon. The lagoon, a critical habitat for manatees, crocodiles, and countless marine species, has faced increased threats from pollution and development. Organizers say the event is not just about competition, it’s a call to action to protect what makes Placencia special.
Participants will choose from three paddling categories, including a 20-mile canoe and sea kayak race along the lagoon’s coastline, a 3.5-mile sit-on-top kayak race around Placencia Caye, and a 1.7-mile paddleboard loop. The race kicks off at 9:00 a.m. from the Pointe Beach and Placencia Municipal Pier, and is open to paddlers of all skill levels. Entry costs $50 BZD per paddler.
Beyond the water races, the Battle of the Paddles will feature a full day of activities at The Point Beach, including beach volleyball tournaments, food and drink vendors, and family-friendly entertainment. Organizers are also inviting the public to get involved by volunteering or donating to the event’s environmental efforts.
In an exclusive interview, event spokesperson Ian Yearwood shared that the long-term vision is to make Battle of the Paddles an annual tradition that not only brings economic activity to Placencia but fosters a deeper connection between residents, visitors, and the natural beauty of the area. “It’s more than a race. It’s a message,” said Yearwood. “We want people to enjoy the environment while understanding the role they play in protecting it.”
