Paddlers, conservationists gear up for first-ever battle of the paddles in Placencia

By Belize Live News Staff: On August 3, 2025, the Placencia Lagoon will host the inaugural Battle of the Paddles, a unique paddling event that combines environmental awareness with community engagement. The event is a joint effort by the Crocodile Research Coalition (CRC) and Barefoot Services, both organizations deeply rooted in the protection of Belize’s natural ecosystems.

The event invites kayakers and paddleboarders of all experience levels to take part in friendly competition while raising awareness about the importance of preserving the Placencia Lagoon and its rich biodiversity. The lagoon is home to manatees, crocodiles, a wide array of bird species, and numerous fish species that depend on healthy mangroves and water systems.

CRC, founded in 2016, works year-round to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife, promote coexistence between communities and crocodiles, and lead educational outreach. Their efforts have helped raise the profile of conservation in the Placencia region.

Barefoot Services, a well-established local tour company, brings extensive tourism expertise to the partnership. The company is helping organize the logistics of the event while also promoting sustainable travel practices that protect the natural beauty visitors come to see.

Participants can expect water-based challenges, paddling races, educational booths, and fun for the whole family. Proceeds from the event will support CRC’s ongoing conservation work and help fund future educational programs.

Those interested in participating or attending can register online now. The event is expected to draw locals, visitors, and environmental advocates alike. Register here.
