Belize Opposition stands with Taiwan, denounces China’s exclusion tactics

By Belize Live News Staff: The Opposition has publicly declared its strong support for Taiwan and called on Belize to remain firm in its diplomatic relationship, rejecting what it described as “coercive tactics” by the People’s Republic of China.

Endorsing a parliamentary resolution that reaffirms Belize’s ties with Taiwan, the Opposition emphasized that the relationship is rooted not only in diplomacy and trade, but in shared democratic principles and mutual development. “This is a bond built on trust, consistency, and respect for human rights,” the statement said.

The party commended Taiwan’s decades-long contributions to Belize in sectors such as healthcare, women’s empowerment, community outreach, and education. Taiwan’s commitment to language and scholarship programs was singled out as having created lasting cultural and educational benefits for young Belizeans.

Crucially, the Opposition criticized efforts by the People’s Republic of China to use UNGA Resolution 2758 as a tool to block Taiwan’s global participation, saying, “We reject the misuse of international instruments to silence Taiwan’s voice.”

The Opposition further stated that support for Taiwan is not a partisan stance but a matter of national conscience. “Belize must lead with courage and principle. Our values cannot be up for negotiation,” the statement said.

They also extended solidarity to Taiwan’s new president, Lai Ching-Te, and expressed gratitude for the ongoing presence and work of Taiwan’s ambassador to Belize.

“Belize stands with Taiwan — in democracy, in friendship, and in our shared vision for a more inclusive global community,” the Opposition concluded.
