By Belize Live News Staff: Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) has issued a public statement addressing recent media speculation about possible consolidation in the local telecom sector. The company clarified that such discussions are neither new nor unique to Belize, but are part of broader global industry trends.
According to BTL, since 2018, the company and other operators have been exploring proposals for potential amalgamation aimed at strengthening Belize’s only national telecom provider. As the sole provider of fully bundled 5-Play services—including DigiTel, DigiCell, DigiNet, DigiTV, and DigiWallet—BTL says it continues to pursue opportunities that enhance efficiency, diversify revenue, and improve service delivery.
BTL’s leadership in areas such as 4G LTE Advanced, fiber-to-the-home expansion, and the launch of financial technology services via DigiWallet was cited as evidence of the company’s ongoing transformation from a traditional telecom company to a modern tech-based operation.
The company emphasized that any future consolidation would be guided by the national interest and would aim to reduce duplication, unlock operational efficiencies, and improve service to consumers and underserved communities. BTL also noted that its strategy is designed to deliver better value not only for customers but for its 1,500-plus shareholders and employees across the country.
BTL reiterated that while industry evolution is ongoing, any decisions will be made with transparency and long-term benefits to Belizeans in mind.
