Trust, fear and urgency: how bank scams work

By Belize Live News Staff: The scammer sounds professional. They know your name. The message carries your bank’s logo. And they say your account is about to be frozen unless you act right now.

According to the Belize Bankers Association, that is exactly how many fraud attempts unfold, and anyone can fall for it.

Association President Dyon Elliott said scammers are increasingly relying on people’s trust in financial institutions rather than trying to break into bank systems directly.

“Be skeptical. Question it. Sometimes an authority figure shows up in front of you, you feel like this is a bank. It’s not the bank that’s calling you, though. They’re using the name of the bank,” he said.

To stay safe, the association recommends:

Never share your PIN, password, token or one time code with anyone.

End any suspicious call or chat and contact your bank through its official channels.

Avoid clicking links in unexpected messages.

Use only official banking websites and apps.

Keep your login details private.

Turn on multi factor authentication.

Elliott said the most important thing to remember is simple: a real bank will never ask for your secret codes. If someone does, it is a scam.
