By Belize Live News Staff: As gun violence continues to rattle Belize City, Opposition Leader Tracy Panton says government’s approach is falling short.
Panton has questioned reports that National Security Minister Michel Chebat and the Commissioner of Police met with gang leaders for mediation talks, even as shootings were reportedly taking place in the city.
In her statement, “Mayhem in Our City Streets,” Panton said talks with gangs must be paired with strong policing, proper investigations and prevention programmes aimed at young people.
She also pressed government on the status of the promised replacement for the Leadership Intervention Unit.
Panton said Belizean families are already struggling with the rising cost of living and should not also have to live in fear of violence.
She is calling for decisive leadership, more accountability and a clear national security plan to restore confidence in public safety.
