By Belize Live News Staff: The Opposition says it supports international help to fight cartels, but wants clear rules before any deal is signed.
Opposition Leader Tracy Panton said the UDP welcomes support from friendly nations on border and national security. But she said any cooperation must protect the rights and safety of Belizeans while strengthening Belize’s own security forces.
Panton said any agreement with the United States must clearly define the mission’s limits, powers and duration, and include strong oversight and accountability.
She also said security cooperation must be part of a wider national strategy to tackle border protection, organized crime, illicit financing, corruption and the recruitment of young people into crime.
“The Opposition is prepared to engage constructively on measures that protect Belize and its people,” she wrote.
Prime Minister John Briceño said this week that Belize needs more equipment, intelligence and training to stop cartels, particularly from Mexico, from moving into the country. He has asked the heads of National Security, the BDF and the Coast Guard to meet US officials.
Guatemala has already said its constitution does not allow foreign troops on its soil.
Panton closed her statement with a call for Belizeans to remain alert and engaged.
