Why Belize marks October 12 as Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day

By Belize Live News Staff: For years, October 12 was known in Belize as Pan American Day. Today, it carries a new name and a deeper meaning: Indigenous Peoples’ Resistance Day.

The change reflects a shift in how the date is remembered. Rather than celebrating the arrival of Europeans in the Americas, the holiday now honours the Indigenous peoples who resisted colonization and whose cultures continue to thrive.

In Belize, that heritage is all around us. The Maya, including the Yucatec, Mopan and Q’eqchi’, have deep roots in this land, and their history is written in ancient Maya sites like Caracol, Xunantunich, Lamanai and Altun Ha. Indigenous communities continue to preserve their languages, farming traditions, crafts and spiritual practices.

The holiday is also a reminder of ongoing conversations about Indigenous rights, including land rights.

Today is a public and bank holiday. Government offices and banks are closed.

Whether you are resting, travelling or spending time with family, take a moment today to learn about, celebrate and respect the Indigenous heritage that helps make Belize who we are.
