By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Dean Barrow wants his party to step up.
The former Prime Minister and longtime UDP leader told 7 News that public frustration over the state of governance gives the United Democratic Party a real opportunity to strengthen its role as a check on the Government.
Barrow said he hopes the UDP can use the moment to deepen Belize’s democracy by acting as a proper constitutional check and balance against the PUP.
He also called on Belizeans from all walks of life to support those efforts, including ordinary citizens and the business community. He said even those who are prospering should recognize that a weak Opposition is not good for the country.
According to Barrow, when the Opposition is hobbled, the Government of the day begins to believe it can act with impunity and is shielded from any serious consequences at the polls.
He insisted his message is about the country, not party politics.
“I am a UDP, but first and foremost, I am a Belizean,” Barrow said.
His comments come a day after he told 7 News that, as things stand, the PUP is likely to win a third term because the Opposition has not yet gelled.
