By Belize Live News Staff: It is official. Karen Bevans keeps her $770,000.
The Caribbean Court of Justice this week dismissed the Belize Tourism Board’s appeal, ending a five year legal fight and locking in the judgment first handed down in 2022.
Bevans was fired as Director of Tourism in 2021, just two years after her five year, six figure contract was renewed. She sued, and won.
The Supreme Court ordered the BTB to pay her $770,000. The Court of Appeal agreed. Now the CCJ, Belize’s final court, has closed the door on any further challenge.
And the money is already in hand. Her attorney, Dean Barrow, says Bevans and former Director of Marketing Misty Michael, who sued after her own dismissal, have already collected the damages awarded to them.
But there is more coming.
Barrow says neither woman has yet collected the legal costs awarded by the Court of Appeal. They held off while the CCJ appeal was pending. Now, those costs can be claimed too.
The CCJ itself did not award costs for the final hearing.
