By Belize Live News Staff: Jeremy Enriquez is welcoming the change of judge in his redistricting case, but he wants answers on how it happened.
“I welcome this as a significant victory for the people of Belize. It takes courage for an ordinary citizen to challenge a judge’s conduct,” Enriquez said.
He said judges hold a public trust and must act impartially and remain accountable.
But Enriquez says he is disappointed by how the change was made. He says the judge’s name simply changed on the court portal without anyone informing his team, and they only found out after his attorney wrote to the Registrar.
“I believe a statement should have been issued with some form of explanation, rather than this being done like a thief in the night,” he said.
He is calling on the Chief Justice to explain when Justice Hondora was removed, why the case was reassigned and what it means for his pending bias application.
The release also notes that the Caribbean Court of Justice recently ruled in favour of Enriquez and Ramlogan, finding Justice Hondora breached court rules by imposing a wasted costs order on Ramlogan without giving them a chance to make representations.
Enriquez also took aim at the Prime Minister, saying he should show the same urgency in defending Belizeans’ constitutional rights as he has shown in defending his wife.
“My pebble is the Supreme Law, and my slingshot is justice,” Enriquez said, vowing to continue the fight for fair electoral boundaries.
The Judiciary has not issued a public statement on the reassignment.
