By Belize Live News Staff: Punta Gorda will lose Tropic Air service beginning November 1, 2026, after the airline announced that it can no longer sustain financial losses associated with its operations in southern Belize.
Tropic Air confirmed Wednesday that its Punta Gorda station will close following a review of its operational performance.
The airline said it has continued serving Punta Gorda despite sustained losses, but the current economic environment and uncertainty facing Belize’s domestic aviation industry have made continued operations commercially unviable.
The closure will have implications for air connectivity in the Toledo District, particularly for passengers, local businesses and tourism operators that have relied on the service.
Tropic Air CEO Max Greif said the airline had been proud to serve Punta Gorda for many years despite the expense involved.
Greif also pointed to uncertainty surrounding proposed changes to Belize’s domestic aviation infrastructure as one of the factors affecting the airline’s decision.
Tropic Air said the closure is necessary to support the company’s long term stability.
The airline thanked the Punta Gorda community for its support and expressed appreciation to employees at the station for their years of service.
Passengers who already have bookings that will be affected by the closure are being advised to contact Tropic Air.
The airline says affected customers will receive assistance with confirmed rebooking or refund arrangements.
