By Belize Live News Staff: Opposition Leader Tracy Panton wants the Government to explain how the First Lady’s visit to Guatemala fits with Belize’s diplomatic stance.
Panton noted that the Prime Minister said Mrs. Briceño attended the gathering, at the invitation of Guatemala’s First Lady, in her capacity as Belize’s First Lady and was recognized as such.
Panton argued that this raises questions, since Belize’s Ambassador to Guatemala was brought home for consultations as Belize protests Guatemala’s actions. Prime Minister Briceño has said the ambassador was not recalled but called home for discussions.
“Our sovereignty must transcend partisan politics,” Panton wrote, adding that every diplomatic measure must be used with care, clarity and resolve.
She called on the Prime Minister to be transparent, answer legitimate questions directly and treat the press with respect.
Her statement ended with a call to “Stay awake Belize!”
